Not just about Diversity

This short blog is not just about diversity it is about Motherhood and Diversity. What could be more powerful than those two together?  What if we add  YOUTH as a third element?  When youth get together to talk about MOTHERHOOD AND DIVERSITY  then that is incredibly powerful. I was just greatly fortunate to be the portrait photographer  (again!) that worked for this group of Youth called FRESH VOICES. They gave me the best subjects to photograph: their own mothers.

My Mother’s Home Posters 2017 will be on tour for 2 more speaker series. The posters will also be exhibited in Public Venues soon. In the mean time you can see some of them in this link.

Below I am sharing a brief of  My Mother’s Home Event where the portraits I took were shown as part of the very moving event.

“On May 18th, nearly 200 people filled Vancity Theatre for My Mother’s Home 2017, a celebration of migration, motherhood, and diversity, and the first event of the 2017 Fresh Voices speaker series. The evening began with guests viewing a photo exhibit co-curated by Rita Hernandez and the Fresh Voices Youth Advisory Team (YAT). Portrait photography captured the intimate bonds between newcomer mothers and their families… Read more

Universe in alignment: Thank you!

It’s surprising even for me  (the owner, webmaster, creator and blogger…) to realize the date of the last post (the previous one).

No, any ET has not abducted me.

No, I have not given up.

No, I have not changed my mind.

No, I have not been dreaming -again!), lying in my bed.

During the blogging absence I have been working and working toward my dream. I just put my heart, (truly my heart!) mind and body together into the same place.

After several years of consistency and coherence, the whole universe is aligned and my dream just turned out to be real. I am living the life I always wanted to live.

I am thankful with many people without whom this dream wouldn’t have ever be possible:

For his eternal immeasurable love and common sense. Generosity, hard working and honesty example plus his great sense of humor:  my Father.  (Never enough space for talking about him)

For her example of strength, persistence, endurance and many I can’t just short list here: my Mother

For his unconditional support and believing in myself in the nice and ugly ones: Hector

For her always presence in my childhood and now in the distance and for her example of what a truly warrior is: my Sister

For their lives, smiles, tantrums, hugs, kisses and simply being my entire life engine: Anna & Greta

For believing in me and liking my work: Vi

For her humongous photographic knowledge and giving me the opportunity: Ana Pedrero

Thank you all, from the teen-ager who dreamed to be a photographer, became manager, then immigrant, entrepreneur and after the years a  happy mother and photographer.

Yes, I do expect more… to give more and do more.

Rita

About Face: Portrait Exhibition

I am really excited about this upcoming exhibition at NVAC next week…

“About Face” group exhibition will show portraits in a very particular way, and one of my photos was selected by the jury to be part in this exhibition.

Ingrid was my model in 2009. I was working on a project called “Reconstruction of The-Self” and I needed some hands to photo shoot. She answered my post and after couple hours in the studio photo shooting her hands, I came across the idea of a portrait of her using a low key setting and bringing out the texture of her white hair and warm hat.  She is an actor so the cenit light setting was also part of the concept of what she loves to do: performance. Please come and discover Ingrid under the spot light.

You are wery welcome to come to the opening of this exhibition. There will be great portraits around Ingrid’s
